Akumal was decorated by the ancient Mayans as “The place of the turtles” because this was one of the places in the southeast where the turtles used to come to nest and rest without anyone being able to harm them.
Today Akumal is one of the ideal places for people who love snorkeling because it has a lot of underground caves to explore, likewise, you can go swimming in the cove of Yal-ku in which you can find a variety of fish of all colors, sizes, and shapes.
In spite of being able to enjoy these activities, the truth is that Akumal is a place that is not so overexploited touristically speaking, however, this does not mean that it does not have large and luxurious places to stay.
